On March 11, 2011 lacquer suffered one of the Worlds worst nuclear accidents to date. The Fukushima nuclear Power plant was damaged by an earthquake and the Tsunami that followed. Although not many people were injured during the initial destruction of the nuclear plant, the health establishs of the radiation poisoning will effect the ecology of the area for many years to come. The article on page 17 of The New York Times titled radiation syndrome in Japan Rice Raises Worries discusses one of the long changeless effects of the accident, radiation poisoning in Japans food try.

The idolatry by scientists that the leaking radiation from the damaged reactors would poison the food supply seems to be coming true. The article discusses tests done on sieve that show high levels of radioactive cesium in a town 35 miles from the power plant.

Nonradioactive cesium occurs naturally in various minerals. Radioactive cesium-137 is produced when uranium and plutonium assimilate neutrons and undergo nuclear fission.



Examples of the uses of this process are nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons. The ripping of uranium and plutonium in fission creates numerous fission products. Cesium-137 is one of the more well-known fission products. Since the half bread and butter of cesium is 30 years the effects of this disaster discharge be expected to last for many years.
